Artist Art

Are You an Artist?   by Lewis Harrison

Are You an Artist?

Art is something that confers particularly appealing or aesthetically pleasing structures, activities, creations, environments, expressions or forms upon an Original Set of passive unrelated variables.

If an artist does not even create their own work? How can they be called an artist?
To start with, let’s be honest. Some of the greatest artists in history like Leonardo daVinci and Michelangelo had plenty of help. Apprentices, assistants and associated did much of the work on many of the great accomplishments of these artists.

There is no hard and fast rule about what is art, what is good or bad art, or how art should be created thus any intellectual discussion about art is bound to be complex. There are so many different types of art and there is just so much that can be discussed in relation to all of the elements related to the creation of art, the experience of art, art criticism, and the many forms and schools of art that exist.

Here is a thought on all this discussion of what is art. I think it is generally acknowledged that Frank Lloyd Wright, the Architect, was a creative and artistic genius. If you have ever seen the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, it takes you breathe away. I was once at a party and met a young designer/architect who worked at the Guggenheim Museum. I asked him what his job was. His response was surprising and was said without sarcasm or any sense of irony: “Fixing Frank Lloyd Wright’s mistakes.”

The point of this story? Some art created to serve a function may be more aesthetically pleasing than it is functional. There are other points I want make as well. Though it is true that some modern artists, particularly conceptual artists, do not create the works they conceive this does not mean it is not their art. Many artists have the vision for a particular work but just don’t have the technical skill to put it all together. What they do is bring in a team of technicians to bring form too their ideas. No too many years ago there was a wonderful collaboration in the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Some sculptors who had an interest in using steel as their artist material went to steel mills in Pittsburgh and created beautiful works in collaboration with the steel workers.

What one must do is explore different ideas concerning what is or is not art, as well as discuss various ideas related to art and personal growth.

At the time of its release, this was the watershed for soundtracks, selling a kazillion copies. It documents Whitney Houston’s character in the Kevin Costner movie, which required Houston to play only herself (although one hopes she wouldn’t end up with someone as smarmy as Costner). The album is as much a testament to the production of Babyface who, through the mid-1990s, actually was the mainstr…
