How to Start Graphic Design as a Beginner? (1)—–from BPOVIA

Posted by admin on Aug 12, 2010 in BPOVIA, design techniques, graphic design

It’s not that easy for a beginner to grasp the basic skills of graphic design. Here BPOVIA will give you some advice about where to start from and how to learn it well.

graphic designBefore you start learning, BPOVIA suggests you to know what exactly graphic design is. Graphic design is the procedure of processing some digital images with special operations, which includes computer technology, digital technology and art originality. In another word, graphic design is an action using the medium of expression of art thorough professional computer software such as Photoshop Illustrator to complete some specific contents of art like logo design, business card design and poster design. Actually graphic design has a wider category such as ads design, brochure design, sample design, font design, visual image design etc… These categories seem rather complicated, but they are not isolated from each other. They all have very close connections actually. As a beginner, you don’t have to master all of them, but just a few of them would be fine. You can achieve mastery through a comprehensive study of some of the categories in the future. This is what graphic designers at BPOVIA have gained in years of experience.

Secondly, BPOVIA requires you to make sure what your habit or interest is. After you get a general understanding of graphic design, you have to make sure if you have interest in it or not. If you are learning graphic design just for a rush, you will lose your interest in no time as soon as you find it difficult to learn. BPOVIA believes that interest is the best teacher. You can do a good job even if you don’t have an art foundation or a design talent, as long as you’re interested in graphic design.

Thirdly, you need to master the basic knowledge and theoretic techniques of graphic design. In graphic design, BPOVIA considers many factors and elements and makes sure that the final purpose of you design is to realize its commercial value to an utmost extent. So mastering the theoretic knowledge and techniques of relevant majors and knowing how to apply them into reality flexibly is a necessary condition to learn graphic design well. If you don’t know the knowledge within something, you can hardly do it well. Besides learning the basic knowledge and theoretic techniques, you have to read some books, magazines and materials related to design, that might be a great help.

The Secret Weapon of Logo Design—from BPOVIA

Posted by admin on Aug 11, 2010 in BPOVIA, graphic design, logo design

In the last post, BPOVIA has introduced one secret weapon in logo design—proportion.  Are you ready for more?  In this article, BPOVIA brings another two weapons to you!  Enjoy!

Weapon No.2: Copying

Cpoying is not designed to highlight the distinct components, but to emphasize a trend, a shifty order.  In some sense, it implies that when copying objects, we should better position in accordance with a linear process.  Here the line can be straight, curve, or a complex interaction thread.

Then, how many repetitive components can express our intent better?  In BPOVIA’s opinion, two repetitive components emphasize a syimagemmetric relationship.  And if you want to express a trend, you need at least three repetitive components, which is the most popular way now.  There is also a more feasible way which is copying according to the number of words in the Logo. But BPOVIA reminds you here: this approach does not fit the Logo which has too many words.

Weapon No.3: Subtle Adjustments

If the proportion and copying are used properly, you can create beautiful work already.  However, the distinctions between the professional designers and novice or amateur are embodied in the latter part of the subtle adjustments.  A logo that lack of subtle adjustments may look okay at first glance, but its charm can not last long and it will become commonplace and tedious gradually.  And the logo with subtle adjustments can have a different result.  It is warm, quiet, elegant, and humane.  Our eyes are engaged in searching the secret in the logo: ah, this group of lines is parallel; this color is echoed; the intersection of two intersecting lines is the center of a circle exactly and so on.  All of these are our subconscious behavior and we have made an assessment of the Logo subconsciously.

Subtle adjustment is a very time-consuming work with no standard.  A feasible approach is: before you give the final outcome, please ask yourself “why, why do I use this expression?  Why use this size, angle and position?  Is there need for improvement?  “Please remember that if we treat our work casually, they would treat our eyes casually too!

To achieve success in Logo design is not a short-term task.  BPOVIA always believes that only when we treat creation as a real fun, the creative process as a source of inspiration, can we let our viewers truly accept and love our work.

The Secret Weapon of Logo Design—from BPOVIA

Posted by admin on Aug 10, 2010 in BPOVIA, graphic design, logo design

Speaking of logo design, you probably immediately think of Photoshop, CorelDraw, Illustrator, Flash and other tools.  Exactly!  It is because of them that our designers can realize the dreams one after another.  In recent articles, BPOVIA is going to tell some secret weapons in logo designing: proportion, copy, and subtle adjustments. “These are summarized in our working practice and time-tested.” said one designer at BPOVIA.  So, what are you waiting for?  Let’s get inside.

Weapon No.1: ProportionDesign-Intervetion

The definition of proportion in the dictionary is: Comparative relation between things or magnitudes as to size, quantity, number, etc.  In the design concept, the relations will be reduced to components in the size or length. The most important principle is to follow the objective law of proportion to make the text easy to read and the body proportion not deform and outstanding. However, there are also large numbers of minor adjustments in this “natural” objective law, which is difficult to detect but can affect the final results directly. Therefore, BPOVIA suggest you do not be stingy with your time when adjusting them to achieve the best proportion.

You may ask:” How to achieve the best proportion?” BPOVIA will give you the answer!

First, we have to find the relationship between the various elements, even it is not always obvious. Secondly, if there are two completely incompatible elements, you should try to transform them into the same size or multiple relationships or other fixed rates. Thirdly, you can add a line to the elements that used as a standard in your head, and then let the other elements close to the line as much as possible. In fact, this is a so useful method that many professional designers believe that “everything in heaven and earth have a line”.

To sum up, the work about proportion is often divided into two parts: first, you should try to find the elements in the design as much as possible; and then, find out the relationship between them and set the standard of proportion.

BPOVIA will introduce another two secret weapons in next article, please stay tuned.
